Since the early 2000’s, using granite for kitchen and bathroom countertops has become a popular choice. It’s not only a beautiful addition to your home, it also resists bacteria and staining – and gives off a dazzling shine.
It’s important to remember, however, that granite as a specific cleaning routine to make sure that the sealant does not wear off too quickly.
Here are a few tips to clean your granite countertop:
- Don’t use harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners, or abrasive scrubbing tools
Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth to clean the countertop. Avoid vinegar and abrasive scrubbers, as this will damage the sealant and scratch the granite.
- Wipe up all spills ASAP
Granite is not as porous as marble, so it will not absorb liquids, oils and stains as easily. However, it’s still a good idea to wipe up spills as soon as possible as an easy preventative measure.
- Clean with warm water and a few drops of dish soap
Wet a soft cloth and apply only a bit of soap to the countertop or your cloth. Wipe the entire surface once to clean it. Wring and rinse out your cloth to avoid spreading food, dirt and grease. Once you have done this, rinse your cloth with fresh water to give the countertop a final wipe down to remove soapy residue.
- Dry the countertop
When you have finished wiping down the countertop, always use a clean micorfibre cloth to dry it to prevent water spots.
